Did you tell anyone (mostly your boss) that you wanted the job … or at least wanted to be considered?
Because people can be pretty dumb, even when they have good intentions. I have a guy that I am supervising right now who really wants to move to another area. But he hasn’t ever told anyone. No one is trying to hold him back, but they probably haven’t considered that he would even WANT that. I told him to talk to my boss, and he’ll probably move this year.
In short, you have to tell people what you want. Managers are bogged down with a bunch of crap and probably don’t have time to think about everyone’s wants.
If you did tell him, and then weren’t considered or given a reason, then that’d fucked up.
so, while i was out on vacation, instead of hiring a new receptionist (like we were told they were doing), the big boss filled the office manager position that i had suggested to my boss.
i suppose, technically, i did not explicitly express my interest, but the position didn’t even exist when i left—at least as far as my boss or fellow underlings were aware.
i don’t know if they announced that they’d be hiring for it while i was out, but i doubt it. they seem to have poached this lady from a competitor, so it’s possible that the big boss had this in the works for a while and just did his own thing.
you can be sure i’ll be talking about this and future opportunities in my review next month!
but, thanks for the reminder about managers often being unaware. i know it’s not really fair to expect them to know what everyone’s plans/hopes are, so i’ll just have to learn to speak up!
